Haats have been offered, on various occasions, as a solution to the hawker "problem." This is a trend that can be seen across cities in many countries of the world and had been effective in India prior to Independence.
They were ceased after the partition of India, but now both the Governments have decided to re-establish these Haats to execute trade between India and Bangladesh once again.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said, "The formal commencement of operation of these 'Haats' on the border between India and Bangladesh has been brought forward with the commendation of both the countries.
It was also reported that the market would be developed at the boundary lines and they would be set up in such a way that people residing in the adjoining space or country at both sides of the border can participate with trust and confidence.
Besides this, the government has also decided to expand its trade activities by establishing markets at various other borders of the country.
